課程概述

This course is the first of a series of a year-long course in statistical methodologies designed for undergraduate students. It introduces the undergraduate student to basic methods of empirical inquiry in the social sciences. The overwhelming majorities of studies that test hypotheses, empirically fit models, produce predictions, or estimate policy impacts are based upon some form of quantitative or statistical analysis. This course will provide a basic introduction to statistical methods for social scientists and policy analysts. The course will provide a solid foundation in statistical inference, enabling the student to become a competent producer of basic statistical research. In addition the skills acquired will enable the student to become a somewhat more sophisticated consumer of more advanced research methodologies.

課程目標
This course teaches the fundamentals of statistics, that is the ability to describe data samples and draw inferences about the populations from which they were drawn. It should also sharpen individual intuition about how to read data, interpret data, and judge others’ claims about data.
Specifically, at the end of this course students should be able to use computer-based statistics packages to:
(837b) characterize population data intuitively for oneself and others;
(837b) draw conclusions and inferences from population data;
(837b) check assumptions of others' claims and debug their putative "facts";
(837b) look for correlations while controlling for confounding effects.
This course should be useful to a wide variety of students both as preparation for more advanced courses and as a means to professional advancement. Throughout your life, you will need to make judgments based on data. This class is designed to help you do that. If you ever wanted to answer questions like “Are minorities being treated fairly?” or “How well do spam filters work?” then this class will help. Tools from statistics can help you rule out competing theories and judge the strength of relationships. It is not just about “the numbers” but rather thinking clearly about what data do and do not imply. Critical thinking about data is part of good citizenship in a modern society— for example, it was a pre-requisite for following some of the controversies during the 2004 Taiwan presidential voting process and determining population counts after the most recent Taiwan census.
Skills from this course will also guide you in many professional tasks. Here are some of the professional tasks that information professionals perform where they can make use of statistical analysis:
(837b) Setting policies for sampling documents to save in archives
(837b) Evaluating user interface alternatives
(837b) Redesigning web sites based on usage history
(837b) Assessing demand for potential new product or service offerings
(837b) Estimating the cost of providing a service
(837b) Evaluating the outcomes of programs and services
(837b) Evaluating the effectiveness of products and government policies
(837b) Collecting, summarizing, and interpreting trend data about organizations in a sector or industry
(837b) Assessing an organization’s compliance with internal or government-imposed policies
(837b) Presenting government statistical data to lay audiences
(837b) Conducting academic research

課程要求
Successful completion of the course depends on reading the texts and completing the assigned homework problems. On occasion, you will be asked to turn in your homework for grading and review. Your performance in the course will be evaluated on the basis of homework assignments (6 to 8 homework, total worth 30% of the final grade) and two in-class open-book examinations (each worth 35% of the final grade). The TA hours will be arranged at your pre-selected time slots.

參考書目
Textbooks Required

- Statistics for Business and Economics (2006) by
McClave, Benson, & Sincich (10th ed). Prentice Hall.
(Available at Hwa-Tai bookstore)
This book will serve as the primary text for this course;
a book was ordered by NTU Library and will be reserved at
the Law & Social Science Library once it is arrived.
Students will find the text to be a useful reference
source for subsequent classes and research.

Many data analysis packages are available and this
semester we will use Excel and SPSS(97fb) which are easily
available at NTU and widely used in teaching and industry.
However, if you wish, you may use anything else but we
cannot promise support. Some NTU Computing Labs supporting
S-PLUS(97fb), SAS(97fb), JMP(97fb), EView(97fb), and STATA(97fb). MATLAB(97fb) is also
a possibility for those who want to do some programming.
